| biography:
| Painter, born in Paris, France. He trained as an engineer and attended the École des Beaux-Arts. A gifted painter, he was also wealthy and gave generous support to the Impressionists, many of whom were his friends. He helped to organize the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and exhibited in the later shows. He painted some 500 works, mainly of contemporary urban life, which were characterized by their realism and perspectives. His major works include Les Raboteurs de Parquet (1875) and Rue de Paris, temps de pluie (1877). |
