| King of Sweden (1950–73), born in Stockholm, Sweden, the son of Gustav V. He studied at the University of Uppsala, and was respected as a scholar, archaeologist, and authority on Chinese art. During his reign a new constitution was under preparation, and the king worked to transform the crown into a democratic monarchy, which helped to preserve it against political demands for a republic. His eldest son, Gustav Adolf (1906–47), having been killed in an air-crash, he was succeeded by his grandson, Carl XVI Gustaf. |
