| King of Sweden (1907–50), born in Stockholm, Sweden. Shy and reserved by nature, he disliked pomp and spectacle, and refused a coronation ceremony, thus becoming the first ‘uncrowned king’ on the Swedish throne. He reigned as a popular constitutional monarch, and in World War 2 came to symbolize the unity of the nation, maintaining its neutrality. During his reign great social advances were made, such as reduced working hours, improved child welfare, and state housing programmes. He was the longest-reigning king in Swedish history. |
