| Composer, born in Kališt&ebreve;, C Czech Republic (formerly Bohemia, Austrian Empire). He studied at the Vienna Conservatory, and worked as a conductor, becoming artistic director of the Vienna Court Opera in 1897. He resigned after 12 years to devote himself to composition and the concert platform. His mature works consist entirely of songs and nine large-scale symphonies, with a 10th left unfinished. He is best known for the song-symphony Das Lied von der Erde (1908–9, The Song of the Earth). |
