| biography:
| Painter, born in Vienna, Austria. The leading master of the Vienna Sezession, he began with a firm of decorators, painting nondescript murals for museums and theatres, but in 1900–3 he painted some murals for the University of Vienna in a new and shocking Symbolist style which caused great controversy. His portraits combine realistically painted heads with flat abstract backgrounds. |
