| biography:
| King of Sweden (1523–60), the founder of the Vasa dynasty, born into a gentry family in Lindholmen, E Sweden. In 1518 he was carried off to Denmark as a hostage, but escaped to lead a peasant rising against the occupying Danes, capturing Stockholm (1523) and driving the enemy from Sweden. He was elected king by the Diet and, despite several rebellions, his 40-year rule left Sweden a peaceful realm. |
