| biography:
| Conductor, born in Berlin, Germany. He studied in Munich, and in 1922 became conductor of the Gewandhaus concerts in Leipzig and of the Berlin Philharmonic. International tours established his reputation, though his highly subjective interpretations of the German masters aroused controversy. His ambivalent attitude to the Hitler regime cost him some popularity outside Germany, but after the War he quickly re-established himself. |
