| German politician and trade union leader, born in Darkehmen, Germany (now Osyorsk, Kaliningrad, Russia). A member of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), he briefly served as premier (Jun–Aug 1919), after which he immediately became chancellor (until Mar 1920), in which capacity he signed the Treaty of Versailles. |
