| Writer, born in Berlin, Germany. He worked as a librarian before becoming a full-time writer. His works include novels (Preisverleihung, 1972), parodies (Maskeraden, 1966), biographies (Das Leben des Jean Paul Friedrich Richter, 1975), an autobiography Zwischenbalanz (1992), and Tristan und Isolde (1975), a retelling of the mediaeval story. He writes about the problems facing the individual in a socialist society using classical forms of writing for modern social comment. A member of the East German PEN club, he became vice-president of the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung (German Academy for Language and Literature) in 1991. He was awarded the Heinrich-Böll-Preis in 1990. |
