| biography:
| Writer, born in Velbert, Wuppertal, W Germany. He studied German literature in Bonn, enjoyed success with his first play U-Boot S 4 (1928) in Berlin, then left for Argentina in 1930. On his return he was forced to write under a pseudonym, producing works such as Die Neubeuerin (1935). Arrested in 1942, he spent the remaining War years in prison. On his release he became mayor of Luckau (1945) and founded the Hebbel-Theater with K H Martin. His plays are socially critical and experimental, though he also worked with traditional forms of theatre and the novel. The love story Das Mädchen von Fanö (1935) was acknowledged to be one of his best works. He also wrote an account of the German resistance movement, Der lautlose Aufstand (1953). |
