| German politician, born in Szczecin (Stettin), NW Poland. A member of the Sozialistiche Einheitspartei (SED) since 1946, he became economics secretary of the Central Committee (1962–73) and member of the Politbüro (1966). Elected deputy chairman of the Ministerrat (1973–6) and of the German Democratic Republic Staatsrat (1984), he lost all posts on the collapse of the SED (Oct 1989) and was dismissed from the party. Investigations concerning misappropriation of state assets are still continuing. |
