| biography:
| Writer, born in Lebus, E Germany. He was a soldier and prisoner of war in World War 2. Regarded as a major post-war writer, his work includes the poetry collection Abgelegene Gehöfte (1948) and the short stories Züge im Nebel (1947), which evoke the atmosphere of post-war Germany in an exemplary fashion. His radio play Träume (1951), one of several, significantly influenced radio plays in the 1950s and 1960s. His later poetry, such as Zu den Akten (1964) and Anlässe und Steingärten (1966), is more austere and less vivid. He married Ilse Aichinger in 1953. Among his awards was the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1959. |
