| Folklorist, born in Estrada, San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria, N Spain, whose other interests include literature, philosophy, and linguistics. He was the son of Toribio Laverde y Gil-Sanz, administrator of the Conde de Vega del Sella, and of Asunción Ruiz de la Madrid y Puertas. At the universities of Oviedo, Madrid, Valladolid, and Salamanca, he studied various subjects in humanities, finally becoming professor of rhetoric and director of the Institute in Lugo (1870–3). In 1873 he was given the chair in Latin literature in the University of Valladolid, which he exchanged for that of General and Spanish Literature. In 1877 he transferred to the University of Santiago de Compostela as dean of the same discipline. His work appeared in such newspapers and journals as La Abeja Montañesa, El Faro Asturiano, El Trabajo de Oviedo, and Las dos Asturias. His only book, Ensayos críticos sobre filosofía, literatura e instrucción pública españoles appeared in 1868. |
