| biography:
| Philosopher, teacher, and poet, born in Santander, N Spain. An ardent Roman Catholic and opponent of krausismo, he received Menéndez Pelayo in Valladolid after he had left Madrid in protest against Salmerón's teachings. Laverde was praised fulsomely in Menéndez's Horacio en España and wrote the prologue to his Polémicas, indicaciones y proyectos sobre ciencia española (1876). He signed controversial articles as L.Ruiz. His poetry, such as ‘La luna y el lirio’ and ‘Paz y misterio’, with its misty Scandinavian or Celtic lyricism, is reminiscent of Ossian. He wrote little, since his active life was spent in teaching and administration, but he found time to gather the work Ensayos críticos de filosofía, literatura e instrucción pública españolas (1868). |
