| Composer, born near Verviers, E Belgium. Attached to the French school, after classical studies in Poitiers and Paris he wrote ‘Andante et Variation’ at the age of 15. He studied with Franck, then D'Indy, by whom he was influenced, as well as by Beethoven. He composed Andromède for the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1891, and Isaye commissioned his Sonate pour violin et piano in 1902. During his short life he produced numerous works, including chamber music, a sonata for violin, a quartet with piano (completed by D'Indy), melodies on texts by Lamartine or himself, and piano pieces. He died prematurely of typhoid. |
