| Baroque painter, born near Bologna, N Italy. He studied in Bologna, and worked both there and in Rome. The fresco painted for the Borghese garden house, ‘Aurora and the Hours’ (1613–14) is usually regarded as his masterpiece, but some critics rank higher the unfinished ‘Nativity’ in San Martino, Naples. He later settled again in Bologna. |
