| biography:
| Writer, born in Vicenza, Veneto, NE Italy. A journalist, he contributed to periodicals and newspapers and edited the review Pan. He wrote novels set in his native Veneto which are notable for the fine study of the characters' psyche. Central to them is the struggle between their rigid Catholic education and the pull of the senses, as in Lettere di una novizia (1941), La gazzetta nera (1943), and I falsi redentori (1949). His later work dealt with contemporary Italy, Le furie (1964) and Le stelle fredde (1970). He also wrote travelogues including De America (1953) and Madame la France (1967). |
