| biography:
| Scholar, born in Paris, France. He studied in Paris and Orléans, and held several diplomatic posts under Louis XII and Francis I. At his suggestion Francis founded the Collège de France. As royal librarian he founded the collection which later became the Bibliothèque Nationale. Of his works on philology, philosophy, and jurisprudence, the two best known are on ancient coins (1514) and the Commentarii linguae Graecae (1519, Commentaries on the Greek Language). |
