| biography:
| Duke of Puglia and King of Sicily. He succeeded his father Guglielmo I in 1166, with his mother, Margherita of Navarra, as regent. He sided with the pope, and joined the Lombard league against Frederick Barbarossa. After the emperor's troops were defeated at Legnano, he signed a peace treaty (1177). He also agreed (1186) to the marriage between his aunt and heir, Costanza, to Frederick's son, Henry, which would bring the Swabian dynasty to Sicily. |
