| Duke of Mantua, born in Mantua, Lombardy, N Italy. In 1550 he succeeded his brother Francesco III, with his mother Margherita Paleologo and Cardinal Ercole as regents. He forged an alliance with the Habsburgs by marrying Eleanor of Austria in 1561, and managed to hold on to Monferrato, repressing the Casale rebellion in 1565, making it a duchy in 1575. He implemented a series of administrative and financial reforms. |
