| biography:
| Celebrated violin maker from Cremona, N Italy. His byname came from his practice of signing IHS (Jesu hominum salvator) after his name on his labels. His instruments are noted for their tonal qualities. He was the nephew of Andrea Guarnieri (fl.1628–98) who, with his two sons Giuseppe Guarnieri (fl.1690–1730) and Pietro Guarnieri (fl.1690–1725), also made quality instruments. |
