| biography:
| Ninth emperor of the Qing dynasty (1875–1908), who remained largely under the control of the Empress Dowager Ci-Xi. In 1898, after the defeat of China by Japan (1894–5), he was determined to reform and strengthen China, and threatened to abdicate if not given full authority. He issued a series of reforming edicts; but his attempts to gain power precipitated a coup, after which he was confined to his palace until his mysterious death one day before the death of the Empress Dowager. |
