| Frisian freedom fighter, whose real name is thought to have been Pier Gerlefs Donia. He controlled the Zuider Zee, drove out Holland's shipping, and raided and sacked Medemblik, Alkmaar, and Hoorn. He tried to keep Friesland independent of Charles V, supporting Charles of Egmont (of Gelre) against George the Bearded of Saxony, until it became evident that Gelre was not interested in Frisian independence, and Charles sold his rights in Friesland to Charles V in 1515. |
