| Norwegian stateswoman and first woman prime minister of Norway (1981, 1986–9, 1990–6), born in Bærum, SE Norway. She studied medicine at Oslo and Harvard, qualifying as a physician. In 1960 she married a leader of the Opposition Conservative Party, Arne (Olav) Brundtland, and they have four children. She joined the Labour Party and entered politics (1969), after working in public medicine services in Oslo. She was appointed environment minister (1974–9) and, as leader of the Labour Party group, became prime minister for the first time. In 1987 she chaired the World Commission on Environment and Development which produced the report Our Common Future. Awarded the Third World Foundation Prize for leadership in environmental issues in 1998, she also served as director-general of the World Health Organization (1998–2003). |
