| Russian field marshal, born near Smolensk, W Russia. He entered the Russian army, attracted the notice of Catherine II, and became her intimate favourite, heavily influencing Russian foreign policy. There is some reason to believe they were secretly married. He distinguished himself in the Russo–Turkish Wars (1768–74, 1787–92), during which Russia gained the Crimea and the N coast of the Black Sea. |
