| biography:
| Pope (1370–8), born in Limoges-Fourche, France. He was the last French pope, and the last of the Avignonese popes when Avignon was the papal seat (1309–77). Made a cardinal (1348) by his uncle, Pope Clement VI, he was elected pope at Avignon (1370) to succeed Urban V. Encouraged by Catherine of Siena, in 1377 he eventually succeeded in returning the papacy to Rome under Pope Urban VI. |
