biography: Pope, born at Grisac, Languedoc, S France. A Benedictine monk, he became Abbot of Notre-Dame du Pré (1352) and Abbot of St Victor Marseilles (1361). He was elected pope at Avignon in 1362. He resided in Rome (1367–70) in a vain attempt to re-establish the papacy there, and returned to Avignon where he died.
