| biography:
| Fourth of the Avignonese popes, born in Maumont, NE France. He was a Benedictine monk, abbot of Fécamp, Bishop of Arras, Archbishop of Sens and then Rouen, cardinal (1338), and pope (1342–52). He supported Charles IV of Luxemburg as emperor against Ludwig the Bavarian. At first he supported Cola di Rienzo in Rome, but later caused him to be expelled from the city and excommunicated (1347). He was a patron of Petrarca. |
