| Translator, born in Yonkers, New York, USA. He taught at Columbia University (1947–68) and Queens College (1968). His National Book Award for his first translation, Julio Cortazar's Hopscotch (1966), was the first of many honours for numerous translations bringing contemporary Latin-American literature to American readers. |
