| biography:
| Pope, born in Anagni, Latium, C Italy. He was elected pope in 1227, and soon clashed with Frederick II. A series of excommunications and reconciliations followed, and culminated with the capture at Meloria by Frederick's son Enzo, of a group of prelates bound for Rome (1241). Gregory promoted the reorganization of the church, fostering missionary work and the Inquisition. He also promulgated a number of decretals which confirmed papal privileges. |
