| Spanish sculptor. From 1605 he worked primarily in Valladolid. Continuing the tradition of black and white religious sculpture, he worked in the manner of Juan de Juni, but accorded more realism and expressiveness to gestures. One of the foremost and best masters of Baroque naturalism in Spain, he abandoned the earlier practice of using gold and brilliant colours, preferring realistic colouring instead. Among his numerous altarpieces are that of San Miguel (in Valladolid, 1606) and that of the Cathedral of Plasencia (1624–34). Among his works in the Museum of Valladolid are a Piedad (1617) and a Bautismo de Christo. |
