| biography:
| Tennis player, born in Montreal, Quebec, SE Canada. A prominent junior player in Canada, winning six junior titles (1985–90), he then turned professional, winning tournaments at Newport (1993), Seoul (1995), and Beijing (1996). He became a British subject in 1995, and the first British player to finish in the world's top 50 since John Lloyd in 1985. A left-handed player, known for his very fast serves, he progressed with alacrity, moving ahead of Tim Henman to become British No 1 in 1997. By the end of the 1999 Wimbledon Championships he was ranked 10th in the world listings, four places behind Henman. Hampered by injury, he was ranked 36 in the 2002 world listings. |
