| Russian general, born in Braunschweig, NC Germany. He was supreme commander of the 1807 campaign against Napoleon I, which saw the battles of Preußiachen Eylau and Friedland. In 1812 he served as chief of general staff under Mikhail Kutuzov, when he defeated Murat before going on to command the Russian reserve troops in the Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig (Battle of the Nations). In 1813 he was raised to the nobility. |
