| US first lady (1869–77), born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. The sister of a West Point classmate of Ulysses S Grant, they were married in 1848. She helped her husband cope with his bouts of depression and hard drinking, and the public admired her style in the White House. Her autobiography was not published until 1975. |
