| biography:
| German lawyer, born in London, UK. He joined Gregor Strasser's Nationalsozialistiche Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP) in 1932, remaining a member until 1940. As deputy police president in Berlin (1937–9) he was active in the resistance movement of Ludwig Beck, and as an officer in Paris in 1943 he acted as a link between various resistance groups. He played a major role in the attempt on Hitler's life (20 Jul 1944), and was executed in Berlin-Plötzensee on 10 August 1944. |
