| German diplomat, born in Kemberg, E Germany. As German ambassador in Moscow (1934–41) he prepared the German–Soviet Non-Agression Pact of 1939. He joined the resistance movement around C F Goerdeler, and was sentenced to death after the assassination attempt on Hitler's life (20 Jul 1944) and executed at Berlin-Plötzensee on 20 November 1944. |
