| biography:
| German naval commander, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He entered the imperial German navy in 1878, and in 1908 became chief-of-staff of the North Sea Command. At the outbreak of World War 1 (1914) he was in command of a commerce-raiding force in the Pacific. Off Coronel (Chile) he sank the British warships Good Hope and Monmouth. The same year he arrived at the Falklands, but he and his ships were taken by surprise and sunk by a reinforced British squadron under Sturdee. |
