| biography:
| Flemish soldier, born in Tilly, SC Belgium. He successfully commanded the forces of the Catholic League in the Thirty Years' War, gaining decisive victories at the White Mountain and Prague (1620). Created a count of the Holy Roman Empire, he defeated Denmark at Lütter (1626). His destruction of Magdeburg (1631) branded him a brutal soldier, and he was routed by Gustav II Adolf at Breitenfeld in Saxony (1631). He was fatally wounded crossing into Bavaria. |
