| Prussian army officer, born near Kolberg, NW Poland (formerly Germany). He became war minister (1859–73), and with Bismarck's support effectively reorganized the army. This helped make possible Prussian victories in the Danish, Austrian, and Franco–Prussian Wars of the 1860s and 1870s. |
