| biography:
| Austrian general, born in Trebenice, NW Czech Republic (formerly Trebnitz, Bohemia). He fought against the Turks (1788–9) and in nearly all the wars between the Austrians and the French, and in 1831 assumed command of the Austrian forces in Lombardo-Veneto. He was appointed commander-in-chief in Lombardy (1831), and promoted field marshal in 1836. He organized the defence of the territory around the ‘quadrilatero’ fortresses, a system which would prove highly successful. In 1848 his retreat from Milan after the Five Day insurrection was offset by the Austrian victory at Custoza, followed in 1849 by Novara and Venice. He was made governor of the Lombardo-Veneto kingdom and harshly suppressed any insurrection. |
