| biography:
| Novelist and short-story writer, born in Madrid, Spain. His achievement was to blend courtly and picaresque elements into a genre which reacted against the more sordid situations then popular in fiction. His best works are the semi-autobiographical Poema trágico del español Gerardo y Desengaño del amor lascivo (1615) and Varia fortuna del soldado Píndaro (1626). He also wrote six short stories, Historias peregrinas y ejemplares (1623). His least interesting writings are the sycophantic conceptista histories, Historia apologética (1622) on Aragón during the reign of Felipe II, and Primera parte de la historia de D Felipe el IIII (1631). |
