| biography:
| Conquistador, born in Córdoba or Granada, S Spain. Appointed magistrate at Santa Marta, in 1536 he headed an expedition, and after many hardships and loss of men conquered the Chibchas in the E. This he called New Granada, and its chief town Santa Fé de Bogotá. In 1569, during a later expedition in search of El Dorado, he reached the R Guaviare not far from the point where it meets the Orinoco. |
