| Poet and patriot, born in Genova, Liguria, NE Italy. A follower of Mazzini, he took part in Milan's Five Day insurrection in 1848 and died during the defence of Rome the next year. He wrote well-known poems, but his fame rests on the Inno militare (1848) which was set to music by Verdi, and Fratelli d'Italia (1847) by Novaro, which in 1946 became the official Italian national anthem. |
