| biography:
| Early Dutch ruler, probably a relative of Rorik, the Danish ruler of Friesland. He controlled at one time Flanders, Friesland, and the Rhine estuary, including Utrecht, Holland, and Zeeland. He converted to Christianity in 882 and married Gisela, daughter of Lothaire II, and was officially made Lord of Friesland by the Emperor Charles III. He was planning further conquests in Lotharingia when he was assassinated. His realm broke up, one part later developing into the county of Holland under Gerolf - one of his assassins. |
