| biography:
| Coach of American football, born in Springville, New York, USA. He studied law at Cornell, embarking in 1895 on a coaching career which lasted 44 years. His most successful tenures were at Carlisle Indian School (1899–1903, 1907–14), the University of Pittsburgh (1915–23), and Stanford University (1924–32), where he developed three Rose Bowl teams. When he retired, his 312 victories exceeded the total achieved by any other coach. His greatest claim to fame was his development of both the single-wing and double-wing offensive formations into versatile and deceptive offensive attacks that were copied for years. |
