| biography:
| Aircraft manufacturer, born in Macksburg, Iowa, USA. He studied at Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, built his first glider in California in 1905, and by 1909 had built and flown his first powered aircraft. In 1912 he flew his seaplane from near Los Angeles to Catalina I and back (32 mi), and in 1913 invented a bomb sight and a free-fall parachute. The production of the MB-1 bomber at his factory at Cleveland in 1918 established him as one of the leading military aircraft manufacturers in the USA. In 1929 he moved to Baltimore, producing such famous aircraft as the B-10 bomber and the China Clipper flying boat. During World War 2 his factory created the B-26 Marauder, Mariner, and Mars flying boats. |
