| biography:
| Classicist and historian, born in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. After graduating summa cum laude in classics from Harvard (1957), he went as a Rhodes Scholar (1957–61) to Oxford (1962 DPhil ancient history) and then returned to teach at Harvard (1962–80) before becoming professor at the School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ (1980). In works such as Greek Sophists in the Roman Empire (1969) and Roman Arabia (1983), he examined areas and epochs previously neglected. His Sather lectures at the University of California (1991–2) were published as Fiction and History: From Nero to Julian. In 1992 his Hellenism in Late Antiquity was awarded the James H Breasted Prize. |
