| biography:
| Ballet dancer and choreographer, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He gave up medical studies to train as a dancer with Hanya Holm. He danced with the American Ballet Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet (1956), and the Netherlands Dance Theatre (in the 1960s), became a guest choreographer for Ballet Rambert, and made his name in Europe with the Stuttgart Ballet (1973–5). In 1986, choreographic work for the National Ballet of Canada led to his appointment as artistic director. In 1997 he created a new work, Amores, as a tribute to Darcey Bussell. |
