| Violinist and composer, born in Piran, SW Slovenia (formerly Pirano, Italy). He studied law and divinity at Padua, and was an accomplished fencer. He secretly married a protegée of the Archbishop of Padua, for which he was arrested. He fled to Assisi but, after attracting the archbishop's attention by his violin playing, he was invited back to his wife. Perhaps one of the greatest violinists of all time, he was also an eminent composer. His best-known work is the Trillo del Diavolo (c.1735, Devil's Trill). |
