| Jurist and politician, born in Verzuolo, Piedmont, NW Italy. As the Kingdom of Sardinia's Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs minister (1848–51), he proposed a series of laws in 1850 (the so-called Siccardi laws) aimed at limiting the clergy's privileges. They abolished, among others, the clergy's immunity, mortmain, and the penalty for failing to comply with religious festivities. The reaction among the clergy of the kingdom was such that prime minister Cavour was forced to resign. |
